Ode to George Wallace

Many of you may not know who ‘George Wallace’ was.. so.. he was Gov. of the State of Alabama during the sixties and times when we sought to finish the civil war.. finish a mind set that left poor whites saying things like.. ‘If I ain’t better than a N______ what am I better than?’..   When discrimination against anyone who was not white wanted an education.. bank account.. a lunch at a restaurant of choice..  a ride forward of the last six seats on a bus..  a walk down certain streets.. an education..  medical care.. or just about anything guaranteed in the Constitution.. It was not condoned or recognized in ‘the deep South’..  The American Constitution won out.. This photo is when President Lyndon Johnson went to Alabama to have a chat with this denizen of old evils..  I wrote this song on Maui in 1968.  I used the typewriter of a girl who helped me heal from a gunshot wound.. These things may not seem important now..  this makes me glad I am an American.. every time I see the result of Love.. found in the guarantees of our founders..  So the lyrics.. appealing to those in self-righteous anger who may forget these very guarantees.. A further appeal to stay from example of the uncaring..  those so lost in externalizing to get a clap or two.. the kind history forgets except in continual apology for letting it happen.. and a vow it will never happen again!..

Lyric.. Music on Rq.

Please don’t shoot him in the head head.. he’s no good to anyone dead.. for his bad example and foul mouthed deed are just a sample of hidden greed..

Let him tell his lies loud.. bad mouthin’ child sweatin’ and proud.. displaying his prejudice shroud..

For the Ignorant Crowd

Standin’ on his podium.. declarin’ himself God’s pagodium.. beatin’ on the bigots’ drum

For the Ignorant Crowd

Please don’t blast him in the chest chest.. let him be a God Damned pest.. Chicken Fry fat man jowlin’ zest

For soon enough he’ll go to rest..

If it wasn’t for a man like him.. we could never see our sins.. he’s thunder and brimstone raisin’ a din..

For the Ignorant Crowd.. For the Ignorant Crowd..

Peace Tony
