HELLO, I USUALLY DO NOT USE MY BLOG FOR VENTING ABOUT PERSONAL THINGS. AMMENDING THAT I WILL SAY IF I DO SO IT IS BECAUSE I FEEL OTHERS ARE ENCOUNTERING OR MAY ENCOUNTER THE SAME THING. IT MUST BE SOMETHING BEING DEPRIVED OR IMPROPERLY USED BY THOSE WHO FEEL IMMUNE TO ANY PENALTY FOR SUCH ACTION. THIS PARTICULAR THORN IN MY SIDE, IS NOT ONLY FRAUD, IT IS A VIOLATION OF MY CIVIL RIGHTS FOR NO REASON I CAN SEE SAVE GREED AND UNCARING PRETENSE.
THIS CONCERNS PHONE LINES UNREMOVED BY PROVIDERS. THESE LINES, IN MANY CASES, WERE INSTALLED DURING THE ERRANT AND RIDICULOUS EXPERIMENT WITH ‘PARTY LINES’. PARTY LINES, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW, WERE A LINE THAT WAS SHARED BETWEEN NEIGHBORS ON THE SAME BLOCK. THE PROBLEMS WERE ENORMOUS, IE: A CHILD WHO LAUGHS AND HANGS UP. THE NEIGHBOR WHO WANTS TO ‘HOG THE LINE’ AND JUST LEAVES THE PHONE OFF THE HOOK UNTIL READY TO USE IT. RUDE INTERRUPTIONS..AND THE CONSISTANT, SOMETIMES SICK INVASION OF PRIVACY. THE PARTY LINES WERE MADE ILLEGAL IN ABOUT 1958. THE LINES REMAIN IN BUILDINGS. A LAW SUIT COULD CONFUSE ISSUES AND BE ENDED IN A FOULED VERDICT. I HAVE SEEN ATTORNEYS DEFENDING A POSITION THAT HAD NO MERIT WITH CONFUSION. (A GOOD ARGUMENT FOR JUDGEMENT BY JURIST).
I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT. LEGALLY THE RESPONSIBLITY IS WITH THE PROVIDER AND ONCE MADE AWARE, THE LANDLORD. THE VIOLATION IN DAY TO DAY APPLICATION LIES WITH THE END USER. NO ONE WANTS SOMEONE ELSE ON THEIR PHONE LINE. THIS MEANS NO ONE..FOLKS FIGHT LAW ENFORCEMENT, OTHER GOVT. AGENCIES AND SO FORTH, TO KEEP THEIR PRIVACY. PRIVACY IS INTRINSIC TO A HAPPY SOCIAL EXISTENCE FOR MANY REASONS, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH: IS VIOLATING PRIVACY IS HIGHLY ILLEGAL. THE FACT THAT ONE DOES NOT LIKE IT AND CAN POINT UP THE OFFENDERS ARE DOING SOMETHING THEY WOULD NOT STAND FOR THEMSELVES CUTS NO ICE. THEY ACT SYMPATHETIC, BUT THEY, FOR THE MOST PART, WOULD SACRIFICE THEIR HONOR, LEGAL POSTION AND SO FORTH, BY LYING AND DECIEVING FOR ABOUT 30 BUCKS A MONTH.
PERSONALLY I HAVE A QUANDRY, POSSIBLY FOR ALL TIME, AGAINST RUINING A LIFE BY CALLING LOCAL LAW TO INVOKE THE FELONY CHARGE THAT IS. THE LAWS START AS MISDOMEANER OFFENSE IN LOCAL AND STATE LAWS IN CALIFORNIA. THEN IT BECOMES A FELONY IF CONTINUED. THESE FOLKS, USING THESE LINES, HAVE BEEN OFF IN FELONY TERRITORY FOR A LONG TIME.
IN MY SITUATION, THE REACTIONS WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO SPEAK OF THESE THINGS, WERE ATROCIOUS AND MISREPRESENTED. EVERY PERSON I SPOKE WITH ACTED INAPPROPRIATELY AND ACTED AS IF THEY HAD SOMETHING TO HIDE. I WAS WILLING TO WORK WITH IT. NOW I SEE THE GOOD PARTS OF MY GOOD NEIGHBORS FADING INTO A CRAP PILE OF DISHONESTY FOR A SMALL PRIZE. THIRTY BUCKS OR SO A MONTH. MY CIVIL RIGHTS, AS YOUR CIVIL RIGHTS, ARE NEEDED; FAR MORE THAN THESE FOLKS NEED THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY. THERE IS NO EXCUSE OR ARGUMENT. I WOULD BE SATISFIED WITH REMOVAL OF THE LINES. IT IS PIE IN THE SKY TO THINK THEY WILL STOP WHILE ABLE TO CHEAT SO EASILY. I HAVE REMOVED ERRANT AND ILLEGAL LINES FROM MY JUNCTION BOX (NOW LOCKED UNDER PROTEST OF THE FORMER LANDLADY) TWICE. ONCE I CUT ONE LINE AND ALL THREE OTHER APTS. HERE LOST THEIR CONNECTIVITY. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAD NO ACCOUNTS. I AM NOT IN A MINORITY. I GUESS HAVING MILITARY BACKGROUND AND BEING A FORMER PHONE CO. EMPLOYEE, ALBEIT FOR A SHORT TIME, HAS GIVEN ME A STEP UP IN SEEING SUCH THINGS AND POSITION WHERE I MUST TRY TO DEFEND THIS MUCH NEEDED CIVIL RIGHT.
END OF VENT..KUDOS TO YOU WHO PAY A COMPETENT PROVIDER..THAT AT LEAST LEAVES CONFLICT AND ‘ROAD KILL BILLS’ AT A MINIMUM.
TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE ‘WIRELESS’ ACCOUNTS AND HAVE CATAGORY 3 LINES RUNNING INTO YOUR HOME..OR HAVE NO ACCOUNTS AT ALL..HEAR ME..IT DOES NOT WORK..WHAT I AM SEEING NOW..WHAT I CARE FOR NOW..IS WHAT ALL FOLKS CARE FOR..BUT FIND IT INCONVENIENT TO ACT UPON. ALL COMMUNICATIONS LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES HAVE EI ROOTS IN PRIVACY.
IT IS NOT ’OKAY’ TO PLUG INTO ANY JACK. FILES BECOME DETERIORATED ON FOLKS COMPUTERS WHO HAVE LEGIT ACCOUNTS. THEY GET VIRUSES. IT BECOMES A MATTER OF DOCUMENTATION WHICH WILL LEAD MANY TO PROSECUTE.
IT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD ‘TECHNICIANS’ LIE TO ME ABOUT OBVIOUS ILLEGALITIES. I THINK THEY WERE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO TO SAVE THE PROVIDERS EXPENSE OF CLEANING UP THIS MESS. THERE ARE MANY MITIGATING FACTORS IN THIS SITUATION, WHEREVER IT RAISES ITS UGLY HEAD. I THINK THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE SOLUTION. FOLKS MUST DEMAND CLEAN, PRIVATE, SECURE LINES AND THEN ACT ACCORDINGLY THEMSELVES.
REMEMBER, NO ONE WILL DEFEND YOUR CIVIL RIGHTS AS YOU DO. ‘THE GREATER THE EXCUSE THE BIGGER THE LIE’.
I HOPE THIS SITUATION FINDS RESOLVE BEFORE IT BECOMES A POLITICAL ISSUE.

I remember party lines – and our operator used to go to bed at 9pm during the week; shut down at 1pm on Saturdays and didn’t open at all on Sundays! If I was on the phone to a school friend and one of our neighbours wanted to make a call they’d just interrupt us and tell us to get off LOL. Hello..I refuse to get old..HO HO..truly I figure the experiences of the past make for a richer now..I do appreciate the good sides of coms these days..party lines? it was a real ‘experience’ to have a three year old..or someone acting that way..to manhandle, or yell into phones and all the other little ‘treats’ that bring them validation and ‘attention’..we did not have an operator in San Diego, or Lakewood for local or non emergency so the service was never down that way..the amazing amount of information, true and invented these people had to gossip about..wow..pick up the phone..hear a voice..wait twenty minutes..pick it up..same voice..sometimes the same story..part eighty five or so..good times..HO HO HO..Peace Tony
Thank you for your thoughts..if you have a DSL..even if it is intranet, fast and firewalled, you should check your junction box, if in an apt. lock it. I am the only person in this building who uses my provider. I locked the box and will not let anyone in, despite threats or pretense, unless they have a verifiable 5 digit employee number AND a current work order. It is truly disgusting that with all the good things that come with privacy..and the demand for same..that small minded cheap, selfish, self centered phonies would do this. They are also, in my eyes, cowards. There are over 5000 stand alone attenae within a two mile radius of my home. I wish they knew half of what they thought they knew. A lot of youngsters think privacy is a thing of the past. They have never worked for anything or been threatened by those who invade. If one will do this. it is a good bet they will commit cybertheft of information if things get tight for them. Invasion of privacy is the worst. I think govt. agencies should have the fourth ammendment tatooed on their asses..to never forget the true gift of being an American..otherwise how are we different? Freedom depends on privacy. Control and cheating depends on violating anything one can, sans decency, honor or an honest representation of who they are..Peace Tony
Wow, I didn’t realize that this type of issue still existed. Years ago my uncle had a party line but this of course was in 1980s rural Nova Scotia. I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with this.
